Chicken Flavoured Crackers

Easy to make Chicken Flavoured Crackers to have on hand when hunger strikes.

Chicken flavoured crackers

Crackers are often favourites with kids and a great option for when you’re on the run or simply when hunger strikes.

Unfortunately, a lot of the commercial crackers are filled with ingredients that can compromise our health. Most savoury biscuits are made of heavily refined ingredients including refined flours, additives, preservatives, flavour enhances, food colours, vegetable oils, iodised salt and sweeteners.

Some families report their child’s behaviour and mood negatively shifts after eating products with these ingredients. Others experience allergic reactions, headaches and sleep disturbances.

Beyond the health issues regarding their consumption, commercial crackers tend to be relatively expensive. This is especially true if you have a tribe of hungry little eaters.

Having said that, I do know there are times when making your own crackers is just not feasible. If that’s the case, I have some go-to’s:

Making your own chicken flavoured crackers

If you have some time and want to make your own crackers, these Chicken Flavoured crackers are super easy and great to make with kids.

I also like these as an option for fussy eaters for several reasons:

  1. They can be cut into fun shapes

  2. They resemble the commercial crackers more than rice or seed crackers

  3. They have the crunch factor

  4. You can mix up the flavours to suit

  5. Kids can make them

  6. They’re made of whole food ingredients

  7. They have good fibre content

  8. Reduce the additive load

To make the these Chicken Flavoured Crackers, all you need to do is mix the spelt flour, almond meal, psyllium, bicarb soda, baking powder and chicken broth powder together.

Then you just add the butter and milk, working the mixture together until it forms a dough. Once it resembles a smooth dough, you can roll it out on a floured surface before cutting shapes and baking.

A note about the chicken broth powder

These Chicken Flavoured Crackers used a dehydrated chicken bone broth powder. I opt for this over stock cubes or bouillons as they are often filled with flavour enhances like glutamate, preservatives, additives like MSG and sweeteners.

You can purchase bone broth powders from health food stores or your local bulk whole foods. In this recipe, I used one from The Source.

Depending on your child’s taste preferences, you could also opt for a vegetable broth powder instead.

HAPPY COOKING!

Chicken flavour crackers

Prep time: 10 mins | Cooking time: 10-12 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 280g wholemeal spelt flour
  • 40g almond meal
  • 3 tbsp psyllium husks
  • 3/4 tsp bicarb soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 - 2 tbsp chicken bone broth powder*
  • 140g unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 8-10 tbsp milk of choice

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a large tray with baking paper.
  2. In a large bowl, place the spelt flour, almond meal, psyllium, bicarb, baking powder and bone broth powder. Mix together to combine well.
  3. Chopped the butter into cubes (about 1cm x 1cm). Make a hole in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the butter and milk, starting with 8 tbsps.
  4. Mix together. You might need to use clean hands to start forming a dough and helping the butter melt. If the dough is too dry, add some more milk.
  5. Once the dough has combined, lightly flour a working surface and roll out the dough to about 6mm thick. Cut out shapes using a cookie cutter or slice into rectangles with a knife. If the dough becomes sticky, lightly sprinkle with flour or place it in the fridge for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Evenly place the cut crackers onto the prepared baking tray. Using a fork or toothpick, pierce the crackers.
  7. Bake the crackers for 10-12 minutes, or until they are lightly golden. Allow to cool on the tray for 5 minutes before placing on a wire rack to cool completely.

Note:

Be selective when choosing the chicken broth powder. Most commercial bouillon cubes unfortunately contain flavour enhances like glutamate, preservatives, additives like MSG and sweeteners.

These will keep in a container for 5-7 days or freeze up to 3 months.
